When the authorities are more concerned with security than opportunity

London just recently had posters put up telling people that in the numbers of people taking pictures, one of them may be suspicious and that they should rat that person out. It’s innocent until proven guilty, you dolts.

On a lighter note, it took less than a day before people started poking fun at those posters.

This article discusses that such behavior is more likely to make people less secure rather than assured that they’re safe from terrorists. It even contrasts it to a time when there was actual mortal peril to people. The government then advised people to be calm and move on with their lives. And that was when bombs were raining from the heavens.

On a smaller scale, when companies implement stricter (and more draconian?) policies in the name of security, it only alienates the employees rather than rally them to your cause, not to mention hampering growth and innovation. Also, it only addresses the wrong issues, thus wasting energy and doing nothing about the real issues.

We will not blindly follow you because we no longer trust that you have our best interests in mind. We will not succumb to the paranoia and myopia that you have nurtured within yourselves and are now trying to cultivate in us.
