New Lightweight Linux Desktop for Notebooks

Since ultra low-cost notebooks are the rage these days and that Linux is becoming a more “pedestrian” OS, lightweight desktop management environments are becoming more popular.

Let’s face it: anything from Microsoft is a resource hog right now and Linux is just too alien for most people.

Things are changing however:

…gOS, the Linux distro that made a splash after Walmart started selling gOS-equipped PCs, is back with a new release.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the new gOS is that the distro has adopted the newer, lightweight LXDE (which stands for Lightweight X11 Desktop Environment), giving the old Enlightenment desktop the heave-ho in the process.

Well, KDE and Gnome are the most similar to Windows as interfaces but they still use up a lot of resources. I noticed this since I remote connect to a Linux machine at work and the connection’s not exactly conducive to running a GUI (wink, wink). I tried using Fluxbox but it’s too stripped down.

However, LXDE is still new and not enough people have tried it yet. Still, it shows a lot of promise.
