Beer…FROM SPACE!
And just when I thought booze here in Madripoor is expensive, I come across this. Why so expensive? Well, it’s beer…FROM SPACE! Well, actually, the barley was grown in space but you get the idea:
The beer was made with grains descended from barley that spent five months in the Zvezda Service Module on the International Space Station. The very limited results, just 250 precious six-packs, will be sold through a lottery for 10,000 yen ($110) each.
Who’d be crazy enough to buy such a novelty? Collectors, probably. But aside from bragging rights, what else is in it for you? Well, “to contribute to the promotion of science education for children and the development of space science research in Japan and Russia, through donation of all proceeds to Okayama University” of course.
But seriously, all this means is that growing crops in space will be feasible for interplanetary, nay, intergalactic travel. As to why they chose barley? I don’t know.
Hey, remember “Homer in Space”?
