I remember watching an episode of Dilbert animated where Wally received a call from a headhunter. The company’s upper management detected the call and got rid of the headhunter. Prior to this, Wally (along with Dilbert) didn’t know there were engineering jobs elsewhere. They only knew about the other prospects when earlier that morning Dilbert ran into an ex-colleague who was actually happy about being an engineer in another company.

Wally later mentioned in their meeting about the call, that there is actually a demand for engineers in other companies. The PHB then said there are no engineering jobs outside their company.

Sounded familiar.

And here’s a funny anecdote: My sister saw him in one of the local malls paying his celfone bill. Through the shop window, my sister and her companion beckoned to him that they take a picture with him. Ramon, ever the comedian then motioned that they wait–he’ll finish up with his chores first. When he did, he happily obliged with the photo op. Now, a lot of people didn’t recognize and were wondering why these girls were having their pictures taken with him.

When that was done, they parted ways. And a few minutes later, he was running, asking them to give him a copy of the pics so he could post them in his multiply/friendster/blog.  And this guy has already appeared on TV numerous times when this happened…in a crowded mall (NOTE: In the Philippines, if you appear on TV, it’s a big deal).

Marvel comics has always had the universe that is based on the real world. Heck, even election fever is picking up in there. And if you’ve been reading titles (at least those titles with settings in the United States), you know that Stephen Colbert is running for US president in the Marvel Universe. His campaign logo pops up everywhere in there.

Say what you want (hate or love them) about Colbert and Quesada; but they sure look like they’re having fun. Just recently, Marvel revealed the latest cover (the Colbert Variant) for the Amazing Spider-man:

You gotta wonder what the hell goes on during those meetings.

But it’s true.

Sheik Muhammad Munajid was a former Saudi embassy diplomat in the states and is now a leading Saudi cleric. He claims the mouse (and everything related) is an agent of Satan, that he turns everything he touches impure.  And that Mickey and all mice should be killed.

On a related note, chief cleric Sheikh Saleh el-Lheidan (also of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia) thought that the olympics and Turkish soap operas were also of Satan. The former because it showed females in “skimpy” clothing (gymnastics, swimming) and the latter of bed scenes.

Whoa.

According to reports, electrical problems stopped some of the magnets from superconducting. Particle accelerators use superconducting magnets to make particles to be smashed go really, really fast (hence the name). And superconductivity can only be achieved in really low temperatures. If you didn’t know it yet, the LHC goes as low as almost–but not quite–absolute zero. That’s 0 Kelvin, -273 celsius. That’s way colder than outer space and the LHC needs that temperature for maximum efficiency.

Why would it take so long? Well, it’s no secret that the accelerator path is ginormous and something that big that is that cool will take a while to warm up (so that a repair crew can go in and do repairs). It has then to be cooled down again for use. Temperature gradients like those for something so big take some time, you know.

Damages to magnets are not uncommon in particle accelerators and repairs only take days. But this is the LHC we’re talking about–the biggest particle accelerator in history that goes to the coolest temperature achievable.
